Study loan amortization

Write-off of a study loan can be applied, when you have been established to have no work ability or your child has been determined to have a severe or profound disability.

Write-off of a study loan can be applied for in the Estonian National Social Insurance Board, when:

  • you have been established to have no work ability  (including 80-100% loss of capacity for work)
  • your child has been determined to have a severe or profound disability (a study loan will only be written off for one parent).

Please note! Only the part of a study loan that has been taken before you were established to have no work ability or your child was determined to have a severe or profound disability will be written off.

Example 1

Mari has a child who has been determined to have a severe disability (severe disability was determined in 2015). Mari enrolled in a vocational educational institution in 2022. Directly after the beginning of her studies Mari took a study loan. Mari wishes to apply for a write-off of her study loan from 01.01.2023. As Mari's child was determined to have a severe disability before she applied for a study loan, she cannot apply for a write-off of her study loan by the State.

Example 2

Jüri enrolled in an institution of higher education in 2020. From the start of his studies, Jüri has applied for a study loan for each year. Jüri was determined to have no work ability in 2022. Jüri has the right to apply for a write-off of his study loan by the State for the period of 2020-2022 (or up to the establishment of his loss of capacity for work).
