Allowance for a family with many children

Allowance for a family with many children is paid in addition to a parent who raises at least three children under 19 years old and who receives child benefits for them.
The allowance is paid for the ongoing month on the 8th date.

Should your family have at least three children for whom we pay child allowance, you will also be paid an allowance for a family with many children until the eldest child turns 19 years old.

  • A family with 3 to 6 children is paid 450 euros per month.
  • A family with 7 or more children is paid 650 euros per month.

The conditions for paying allowance for family with many children:

  • This allowance is assigned automatically and only if one and the same parent receives child benefit for at least three children;
  • It is neither possible nor necessary to apply separately for allowance for family with many children
  • This allowance is paid per family, and the recipient is either one of the parents, spouse of a child’s parent, registered partner, or a guardian, or the children’s custodian.

Single parent's child allowance 19,18 80 80
Child allowance for the 1st and 2nd child in a family 60 80 80
Child allowance from the 3rd child 100 100 100
Allowance for a family with many children (3-6 children) 300 650 450
Allowance for a family with many children (7 or more children) 400 850 650
Upper age limit for the oldest child in a family with dependent child allowance 19 19 19

Note! If there are six or more children in your family, parents cannot divide child benefits among themselves, i.e. It is impossible for both parents to receive child benefits for three children, and also for both parents to receive benefits for a large family. Only one parent for the whole family can receive allowance for family with many children.

Example: There are two children in your family, and a third child will be born soon. Currently, one parent receives child benefit for one child, and the other parent for the other child. Allowance for a large family is provided only if one of the parents receives child benefits for at least three children.

Therefore, if you receive an offer for child benefit in connection with the birth of your third child, neither parent will be offered an allowance for family with many children, since the conditions for receiving this allowance will not be met, because your third child will be considered the second for both parents.

To receive child benefit for a third child in the amount of 100 euros per month, as well as allowance for family with many children, your family must change one child benefit recipient prior to the birth of the third child. This means that one parent must renounce child benefit in favor of the other parent in order for the family to be eligible to receive the alowance for family with many children for the birth of a third child.

If you change the recepient of the child benefit after the birth of the third child you would lose some amount of parental benefits for the first months after the third child was born.

Child allowance

What does it mean that family allowances are paid until the age of 19?

If there is a child under 19 in your family, we pay child allowance for him. In the year when the child turns 19, child allowance will be paid only to young people without secondary education until they graduate from school or until the end of the current school year: 30 June or 31 August.

Example 1. The child turns 19 on 15.05.2024 and studies in the 11G class of Tartu Tamme Gymnasium as of the 19th birthday. Since the academic year ends on 31.08 in the 11th grade, family benefits are granted and paid for the child until 31.08. This means until the end of the current school year when the child turns 19.

Example 2. The child turns 19 on 05.06.2024 and studies in the 12th grade of Tallinn High School as of the 19th birthday. Since the 12th grade ends on 30.06, family benefits are granted and paid for the child until 30.06. This means until the end of the current school year, when the child turns 19.

Example 3. The child turns 19 on 20.04.2024, the child does not study as of the 19th birthday. Since the child does not study on the day he turns 19, the payment of family allowances for the child will stop at the end of the month when the child turns 19, i.e. 30.04.2024.

If the child turned 19 in September and is studying at a university, will we start receiving child benefit for him from January 2024?

No. Since this child is studying at a university, i.e. he has acquired a secondary education, his right to child allowance has already expired, and he will not have this right in January 2024 either.

If a young person who turns 19 during the academic year studies in a foreign country, does a school certificate have to be submitted in order to continue receiving child allowance?

If a school certificate for studying abroad has been previously submitted, it does not need to be submitted again when the child turns 19.

Allowance for family with many children

How is the allowance for family with many children distributed if the children grow up in family with kids from different marriages?

According to the Family Benefits Act, a biological parent, a parent's spouse or a registered life partner, or a person raising children who is raising a child together with a biological parent, has the right to apply for family allowances.

If children from a previous relationship grow up together in the family, it is possible to transfer the right to family allowances to the other parent if you are married. If you are not married, the condition is to raise a joint child in the family.

The recipient can be changed on the basis of the parents' agreement, which means that the parent who has received allowances so far gives his consent to the reassignment of allowances. The other parent applies for allowances for all children growing up together in the family.

Please note that when applying for family allowances, a child can belong to only one family.
