Early old age pension

Early old age pension is a type of pension that will gradually disappear from 2021. Until 2025, those wishing to retire earlier can choose for themselves whether to remain on an early retirement pension or a flexible retirement pension.

In the years 2021–2025, the retirement age required to receive an early old-age pension will increase, and from 2026 this type of pension will no longer be determined.

In the years 2021-2025, those wishing to retire earlier can choose whether to remain on an early old age pension or a flexible old age pension.

In the case of early old-age pension, only the requirement for pensionable years acquired in Estonia will change, which will increase by one year for each calendar year. The rest of the conditions remain the same

You can receive an early old-age pension (early pension in common parlance) if you meet both of the following conditions:

  • you do not work (nor receive income through a business account)
  • you have three or fewer years left until retirement age

In case of early retirement, your pension will be reduced by 0.4% for each month you retire earlier. The calculation is done in full months, and half months are considered full months. For example, if you retire early 11 months and 4 days earlier, it is considered that you have retired 12 months earlier.

The earliest you can retire is three years before the retirement age. This will reduce your pension by 14.4% per month (36 months x 0.4%). You will receive a pension reduced by the same percentage after reaching the old-age pension age.

If you already receive an early old-age pension but you go back to work before reaching retirement age (or receive income through a business account), you will no longer receive a pension from the first day of the month following the start of work.

You will start receiving a pension again after you stop working or reach the old-age pension age.

If you are a sole proprietor, you are entitled to an early retirement pension when you have stopped your activities as a sole proprietor in the commercial register.
