  • The benefit is paid to help arrange a funeral. The person organising the funeral is entitled to this benefit regardless of their relation to the deceased.
  • The amount of the funeral benefit is determined by local governments. The amount of the benefit varies by regions and ranges between 250 and 450 euros in 2019.

  • The deadline for filing an application is determined by local governments. It varies by regions and ranges between 10 days and 6 months from the funeral.

N.B. There is a new procedure for the issue of death certificates as of 01.07.2019.

A death certificate is issued by a medical institution (hospital, family physician, ambulance crew) who will send the information to the Population Register. A death certificate need not be additionally registered in rural municipality or city government. The local government must only be contacted in order to register a death if the death certificate has not been issued by a medical institution.
